Water facts and conservation information from the existing CPWA website.
Less than 1% is actually consumed
Generally speaking, less than 1% of the treated water produced by water utilities is actually consumed. The rest is used for lawns, washing, toilets, and other household purposes.
The same water keeps circulating
There is as much water in the world today as there was thousands of years ago. It is continually recycled through the water cycle.
Check toilets for hidden leaks
Put about 10 drops of food coloring in the toilet tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, the tank is leaking.
Only a small share is readily drinkable
Nearly 97% of the world’s water is salty or otherwise undrinkable and about 2% is locked in ice caps and glaciers.
Dishwashers can use less water
The existing CPWA resource notes that an automatic dishwasher may use 9–12 gallons while hand washing can use up to 20 gallons.
Small leaks add up
A leak totaling only two tablespoons per minute can waste about 15 gallons a day, 105 gallons a week, and 5,460 gallons a year.
