Hydrant Permit
Apply online for permission to draw water from a CPWA hydrant.
Equipment Rental
Approved permit holders may rent CPWA backflow devices, gate valves, and hydrant wrenches subject to availability.
Annual Hydrant Permits
Tank trucks and hydrant connections greater than 1 inch require a double-check-valve backflow preventer or an air gap certified by CPWA personnel of at least twice the diameter of the fill pipe.
| Tank Size | Annual Permit Fee |
|---|---|
| Less than 1,000 gallons | $500 |
| 1,001–2,000 gallons | $750 |
| 2,001–3,000 gallons | $1,000 |
| Over 3,000 gallons | $1,250 |
All other annual hydrant uses require a $1,500 yearly permit fee. Before a permit is issued, CPWA must inspect the tanker or equipment, including tanker size, backflow prevention or air gap, gate valve, and hydrant wrench. Annual permits expire March 1 of the year following issuance and use is limited to CPWA-designated hydrants. Permit holders must notify CPWA immediately if a backflow-prevention device malfunctions. Equipment is subject to annual inspection, and backflow-prevention devices must be tested annually with a copy of the test report submitted before a hydrant permit is issued.
Temporary Permits
For temporary uses such as special events, filling commercial swimming pools, or commercial street sweeping, CPWA may provide a gate valve and backflow preventer for a maximum of 10 days, with a one-day minimum. The permit fee is $100 per day and the permit is valid only for the specified hydrant and permit holder or authorized agent.
